Actually, it seems to me...This is a great tutorial! Actually, it seems to me that the process would be A LOT simpler if you used GRASS instead of ArcGIS. And you would make it TOTALLY open source that way too. GRASS has an XYZ direct importer module called r.in.xyz (meant for use with LIDAR datasets). Basically, you would do all your steps up through the point editing in Meshalb. You would then open GRASS, and make a new XY (ungeoreferenced) mapset with an appropriate grid resolution and spatial extent (which would vary according to the density and spread of you point cloud). Then, import your edited point cloud using r.in.xyz. You will likely have to make a little header (the help file for r.in.xyz shows this format), but you should be able to have the data columns in any order (I think you choose which is x, y, and z). Anyway, this operation makes an unreferenced 3D raster point cloud directly out of the XYZ data. It will have holes in it, so you will need to interpolate the cloud into a seamless DEM. You can either interpolate the cloud to DEM now, or wait until after you georeference it (doesn't matter to GRASS which order you do it in). GRASS has a bunch of different interpolation algorithms to choose from, but probably the best one to use will be r.surf.rst, which uses regularized spline tension interpolation... Anyway, that's how you get your DEM. To georeference it, import your GCP's the same way, but as a separate map. This will also be a Raster map. Then, load the georeferencing tool, make a new image group with your DEM (and/or pointcloud) and your GCP map in it. Use your GPS data to add the coords to your GCPs, and then let it georeference into a new GRASS location (which you've made in your coord system). Then, you need to figure out the vertical offset to set the elevation. It should be a fairly standard offset at the GCP's where you have the elevation data, so just figure it out and subtract/add the right number of meters to the DEM in the map calculator, and you should be good to go!OneHarphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02337666008800045945noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885771479626228472.post-6896788163042864982012-04-23T04:50:01.595-07:002012-04-23T04:50:01.595-07:00Hey George,

I am not sure how accurate my GCPs were maybe 1000 meters of give or take would this royally mess the model up?
First I was using the Coordinate system you were using in South America and I thought this might be why but when I changed it to a coordinate system for North America it still came out looking the same with all the colors lined up in the same direction.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this.
Thanks =)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7885771479626228472.post-85010800450915783592011-06-14T07:58:50.910-07:002011-06-14T07:58:50.910-07:00Hi Mark,
